Long Live the Butler's Pantry

Long Live the Butler’s Pantry

We love watching the way homes have evolved over time. It is actually a constant discussion in our house since we live in historical New England and are surrounded by so many historical homes. As a residential architect and designer duo we both have our own take on what historic elements of a home should be honored and saved for the next generation. As homes around us have evolved we’ve seen houses get bigger and we’ve also seen the simultaneous elimination of laundry chutes, shared baths, and the slow phase out of Living Rooms all together. One of the rooms we want to plead with you to save - a favorite feature of historical homes - is the Butler’s Pantry. Below we get into why this should be a defined space in your forever custom home, whether it’s a Modern Farmhouse, a Mountain Home or a Coastal Shingle Style.

Navy Butler’s Pantry with Open Shelves

Obviously a great Butler’s Pantry gives you added storage, which is always a big win - especially for lesser used items like silver and china that you don’t need stored in your Kitchen itself. In addition to the storage a Butler’s Pantry is a great spot to give your house some personality. Exposed shelves allow you to display decorative items to make your home a unique reflection of you.

Light Green Butler’s Pantry with Wine Fridge

The Butler’s Pantry is also a perfect spot for an extra dishwasher, wine refrigerator, stand alone icemaker and a small sink. These appliances come into play in a big way during the holidays when all Kitchen appliances are at max capacity.

Butler’s Pantry with Penny Rounds and Chiang Mai Wallpaper

From a design perspective - a Butler’s pantry is like a little jewel box of a room. You have the ability to go over the top in a Butler’s Pantry. Wallpaper is always a winner. Whether as simple as a grasscloth or as an energizing as a multi-colored floral - this room gets to have a lot of personality. Glass front cabinet doors always add a little extra reflectivity and sparkle to the space - and keeping cabinets organized is much more simple when the majority of items stored in here are glassware.

Bottom line is we love a good Butler’s Pantry. Let us know if we can help you design yours, because…

Together we create.
